Indonesian Ministry of Law & Human Rights Explains Tangerang Class 1 Prison Burning

Media www.rajawalisiber.com – The Ministry of Law and Human Rights, Yasonna Laoly, explained that the fire incident in the Class 1 Tangerang prison was allegedly caused by an electrical short circuit, and considering that the electrical installation was outdated.

“The Tangerang prison is approximately 42 years old, but the electrical installations have never been renewed,” Yasonna Laoly said at a press conference, Wednesday (8/9/2021).

Yasonna said 40 prisoners died on the spot while one other person died on the way to the hospital.

For those who died, one prisoner was in a murder case, one was a terrorism convict and the rest were drug convicts,” said Yasonna.

Yasonna also denied the news that a drug kingpin was also killed in the incident.

“There are no drug lords here. We have sent all the drug kingpins to the Nusa Kambangan prison, so there are none,” he explained.

The fire that occurred in the Class 1 Tangerang prison occurred at 01.40 WIB. Subsequently, the fire was extinguished at around 03.00 WIB. And currently the location of the fire is in the process of cooling.

Based on information from the Head of the Regional Office of the Ministry of Law and Human Rights Banten Agus Toyib, Tangerang Class I prison is currently inhabited by 2,072 people. Meanwhile, Block C which was burned was inhabited by 122 people.

The dead and seriously injured were taken to the dr. Sitanala and Tangerang District Hospital. Meanwhile, the lightly injured victims received treatment at the Tangerang Lapas Polyclinic.
