From The WashingtonInstitute
Media www.rajawalisiber.com – Since the dismantling of the Islamic State caliphate in early 2019, the situation in northeast Syria has been moving from kinetic to developmental. U.S. advisors and funds are supporting projects to promote stability, economic development, and an independent security apparatus, much of which is aimed at preventing an IS resurgence. From private ventures to efforts funded by the UN and other international organizations, all of these projects are pivotal to Washington’s plans for bringing the decade-long war to an end. To discuss these issues, The Washington Institute is pleased to announce a virtual Policy Forum with Jennifer Cafarella, Sasha Ghosh-Siminoff, and Kenneth R. Rosen, who recently returned from a trip to north Syria and has written extensively about intra-Kurdish dialogue, women’s rights, and the future of al-Hawl refugee camp. Jennifer Cafarella is the national security fellow at the Institute for the Study of War and a visiting fellow at George Mason University’s National Security Institute, focusing on U.S. defense strategy. She writes and speaks frequently on Syria, the Middle East, and jihadism. Sasha Ghosh-Siminoff is executive director and cofounder of People Demand Change Inc., a startup that focuses on monitoring and evaluating humanitarian aid and development programs and providing long-term solutions for these issues in the Middle East, including Syria. Previously, he worked as executive director of the Syrian Emergency Task Force and a journalist with Congressional Quarterly. Kenneth R. Rosen, The Washington Institute’s journalist-in-residence, is a two-time finalist for the Livingston Award in international reporting and a recipient of the Bayeux Calvados-Normandy Award for War Correspondents. He has written for the New Yorker, New York Times Magazine, and the Atlantic, and is the author of two books of narrative nonfiction.
