Courageous and independent journalism took center stage at Columbia University in New York last Sept. 9, during the annual award ceremony at the IPI World Congress.

Media – The IPI-IMS World Press Freedom Award was presented to Carlos Dada, editor-in-chief of Salvador’s pioneering online news site El Faro, harassed for years by governments and criminal organisations alike, and late Al Jazeera journalist Shireen Abu Akleh, a leading woman journalist who was tragically killed by a Israeli sniper last May while on assignment on Palestinian territories.

The ceremony also put the spotlight on profound challenges and risks facing journalists in Ukraine. The jury presented the IPI-IMS Free Media Pioneer award to seven independent Ukrainian news outlets for their outstanding reporting on the Russian invasion.
