Media www.rajawalisiber.com – Video message by António Guterres, Secretary-General of the United Nations, on World Cities Day 2023.

“I am pleased to greet this celebration of World Cities Day in Istanbul. Cities play a pivotal role in achieving the 2030 Agenda and the Sustainable Development Goals.

They foster innovation, culture and economic growth.

They are also key to tackling today’s complex challenges – from growing inequalities to the triple planetary crisis, from quality education to healthcare.

Local authorities often struggle with limited support and resources to deliver for their communities – while demand for infrastructure, affordable housing, efficient transport, green spaces and social services is immense and growing.

The situation calls for a new social pact, based on human rights.

Governments, international organizations, the private sector and civil society must work together to mobilize finance for inclusive and resilient cities – that support both people and our planet.

Sustainable policies and urban planning create green jobs and opportunities for the youth, enable digital connectivity and advance gender equality.

Circular economies save money, reduce emissions and promote public health.

I salute the government of Türkiye on its Zero Waste initiative, and the personal commitment of Her Excellency Emine Erdoğan.

And I send my best wishes to tomorrow’s meeting of my Advisory Board of Eminent Persons on Zero Waste here in Istanbul.

Dear friends, As we mark World Cities Day, let us work together for urban areas that are beacons of sustainability, resilience, and prosperity for all. Thank you”.
